1. What is the idea?
The idea is simple: to try and make $1m (US) by selling 1,000,000 pixels for $1 each. Much like 'The Million Dollar Homepage" only to do it with the objective to help fight cancer. The main motivation for doing this is to donate (in the donators name) to the various cancer fighting funds, such as the American Cancer Society and The V Foundation. I know everyone has been affected in one way or another with cancer.
So, everyone is welcome to buy my pixels, which are available in 100-pixel 'blocks' (each measuring 10x10 pixels). You will see the homepage is divided into 10,000 of these 100-pixel blocks (hence there are 1,000,000 pixels in total). The reason for selling them in 100-pixel blocks is because anything smaller would be too small to display anything meaningful.
You can buy as many pixels as you like, as long as there are some available (see the live stats in the top right corner of the page). When you buy some pixels, you can then display an image/ad/logo of your choice in the space you have purchased. You can also have the image click through to your own website. However, no obscene or offensive images are allowed.
The pixels you buy will be displayed on the homepage permanently. The homepage will not change. Using some of the money I make from the site, I guarantee to keep it online for at least 5 years, but hopefully much longer. I want it to become a kind of internet time capsule. So, in the long run, I believe the pixels will offer good value. You will have a piece of internet history!
2. Who are you?
My name is Kerry Knoll, I am the owner of Vegas Tech Group, LLC. and founder of this domain. Sadly my family was has had it's bouts with cancer in the past, my father passed away from cancer when I was just 12 years old, 2 years after my very close grandma also fell victim to cancer. I'm tired of the suffering everyone has from this outrageous disease and I figure what better way to try to help beat it.
3. Are you genuine/is this a joke?
We are completely genuine and although this site might be funny in various ways, it is not a joke! We really are selling pixels for $1 each, because we want to start really contributing to society in a way that we can truly make my mark in history.
4. How did you come up with the idea?
The original The Million Dollar Homepage inspired my actions, and there we were, trying to figure out a way we could do some good and at the same time try to make a few dollars doing something we love anyway (web design). We think we're creative, so we wanted to come up with an idea that was unique and benefit everyone not just our bottomline.
5. Why do you need $1m for cancer?
We don't. We don't think $1 million is even close enough, but every little bit helps and as the success of this page grows so will the total amount donated in search of a cure for cancer!
Infact, raising money and awareness whatsoever by selling pixels had to be worth a try. Furthermore, we knew the site had to be 'Advertise To Cure Cancer' in order to catch people's attention - anything else just wouldn't do the trick.
6. What will you do with the money?
First and foremost, 80% of all revenues will be donated (in the donor's name) to one cancer foundation or another. Once your payment has been received we will be completing the donation in your name or your company's name and you will get confirmation of this donation while at the sametime getting a 100% tax free write off and becoming a part of history for more reasons than one. What can you you lose??? This is a win-win situation for everyone involved! We will be retaining 20% for the services we are providing.
Finally... if we reach the $1m target and all the pixels have been filled we will be adding additional grids and once we have 5 grids filled 100% of any further revenues will be donated.
7. Why should I buy your pixels?
Because you will have an image and a link to your site on the homepage of a site that could potentially be seen by millions of people over the coming years. The site will be online for as long as we are around, that's guaranteed, but the idea is to keep it online forever. So you really could own a piece of 'internet history' and at the same time be a part of something even greater like finding a cure for cancer!
8. Why can't I buy one single pixel?
We decided that although it would probably be cool if individuals could buy a single pixel each, in practice, it wouldn't so effective. The reason we believe this is because you can't display anything meaningful in one pixel - nor click it easily - so visually, it would be pointless. With thousands of random tiny coloured dots all over the place, the homepage would look gastly.
We also thought that the site would appeal more to people with businesses/websites to advertise than it would to individuals, or to put it more accurately, businesses would pay more to have a meaningful graphic on the homepage. Hence the minimum purchase is $100 - a 10x10 block.
However! If you really want to own a single pixel, there is always the option of getting together with your friends/family/colleauges and buying a 10x10 block.
9. How long will the site be online?
The site will be online for the rest of my life guaranteed, however the aim is to keep the site online forever (or as long as humanly possible).
The idea is to create something similar to the original The Million Dollar Homepage: a homepage that is unique and permanent while at the same time sending a very strong message. As my predecesor says, "Everything on the internet keeps changing so fast, it will be nice to have something that stays solid and permanent for many years. You can be a part of that!".
10. Are you worried about copy-cats/rip-offs?
Not at all. I infact got this idea from my predecessor, The Million Dollar Homepage and it's bound to happen again.
11. Can I put a count of your pixel sales on my site/blog?
Certainly! The code is:
